Kemi Craig has been selected as the 2022-2024 Artist in Residence

Through her life experience as a woman of African descent, I am inspired by Black history and Afrofuturism, dance that defines and adds do everybody dayDIY culture and through the visual history and production of pop culture.

Kemi I am a graduate of the Emily Carr University of Art Design with a Masters degree in Fine Art. Since graduating she has exhibited and performed at local art centers as well as throughout BC and Canada. His film and video work has been shown at local galleries such as Legacy Art Gallery, Flux Gallery, Casual Living Sector as well as the Victoria International Film Festival and Antimatter Media Arts Festival. He has worked with the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and Xchanges Gallery as art educator / guide and curator. Three years ago, Kemi has been a Dance Artist in Residence Victoriaand has danced as a soloist and dance company at local events and shows and in a book about the experiences of local Black people. Most recently, he performed at Art in the Open Contemporary Arts Festival in Charlottetown, PEI.

His goal during the home The residency is to create multi-sensory, site-specific applications and displays, embedded with social and audience interaction. Kemi agrees it is important to share opportunities for the public to participate in the art making process. “I enjoy the process of making art and working together to create performances that share a movement with other artists.n.d create opportunities for audience participation by being facilitators and storytellers,” says Kemi. “The opportunity to work as an Artist in Residence for the City of Victoria will help me bring art into public spaces.. I look forward to creating with all of you.

Meet and Greet – You’re Invited!

The public is invited to meet Kemi Craig at a Meet and Greet Antechambers event at City Hall on Tuesday, November 22nd at 6pm. The free event will feature an artist talk and show from Kemi, as well as an opportunity for the public to ask questions. All ages welcome. Light refreshments will be provided.
