Famous artist of Assam, Neel Pawan Baruah died after a long illness. He was 84 years old. Baruah was born in Jorhat to the eminent poet of Assam, Binanda Chandra Baruah, popularly called ‘Dhwani Kobi’, and Labanya Prava Baruah. Alumnus of Santiniketan’s Kala Bhawan, Baruah was a talented artist whose skills ranged from painting, pottery, mask making and poetry writing.

After completing his graduation in fine arts, he studied glazed pottery at Sriniketan and also owned the Garhi Studio, New Delhi. An artist who often experimented with different media, Baruah left many cigarette packs and sports boxes which were displayed in many exhibitions in the state and across the country.
In particular: In 2021, he was awarded ‘Assam Sourabh’ award by the Government of Assam. Baruah was married Dipali Borthakur, the ‘Nightingale of Assam’ who passed away on December 21, 2018.
