“The culture of a startup with the resources of a big company”: Why work at Hexagon’s Autonomy and Placement Division| Roadsleeper.com

Hexagon’s Freelance and Localization Division is hiring! In this article, Hexagon sits down with Embedded Implementation Engineer Michael Kuzma to ask “Why work at Hexagon?”
GPS positioning technologies are all around us to the point where they are almost invisible and are expected to ‘just work’. As positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) technologies evolve and continue to enable autonomy, more and more people will rely on these solutions. However, the work that goes into the research and development of autonomy and location technology is anything but invisible.
The technology industry accounts for 10.5% of total US GDP, but the sector is expected to grow by 6.7% by the end of this year. The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) saw industry employment grow 46% over the employment rate by 2021. All signs point to growth, but what is someone in tech looking for in the workplace?
Michael Kuzma, an embedded implementation engineer in Hexagon’s autonomy and colocation division, started out as an intern looking for a startup environment in Morton, Illinois.

“Michael Kuzma has worked in Hexagon’s Autonomy and Localization division for the past three years, starting as an intern and becoming an embedded implementation engineer.”
“I was very interested in a fast-paced environment with a fun and relaxed culture,” Kuzma said. “It has the culture of a startup while having the capital and scale of a large corporation.
As someone who works in engineering, Kuzma has his hands full with interesting new challenges on a daily basis.
“The average day-to-day varies a lot – as it should, in my opinion,” he explains. “Some days involve coding up solutions in Simulink or C++. Other days involve examining a vehicle to see how it works electrically. Constant learning is the only constant in my day.”
Kuzma appreciates the flexibility and agility of working at a company that feels like a startup but has a larger team with more resources. In 2018, Pioneer found that 23% of startups cited team issues as a cause of failure. For Kuzma, these issues are rare thanks to the collaborative environment at Hexagon.
“The team is always willing to collaborate and work together. More importantly, and what makes me want to stay, is that the culture is open to having a life outside of work.”
A flexible workplace for work-life balance is a priority for Hexagon, with their 2022 employee survey showing that 97% of employees agree that their immediate supervisor is flexible when they need to take care of a personal or family matter.
“Work is not meant to be 60 hours a week,” Kuzma added. “Make sure you ask about company culture and that you can be your authentic ‘you’ with the people you work with.”
From intern to engineer to embedded implementation specialist, Kuzma has seen a lot of R&D and technology development in his time at Hexagon. After all these changes, he would still consider himself one of the 83% of employees who are proud to work for Hexagon.
